Lady Anne Clifford was a formidable noblewoman who spent over 40 years fighting for her rightful inheritance—the vast Clifford estates in northern England, including castles at Skipton, Appleby, Brougham, Pendragon, and Brough. Despite being the only surviving child of George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland, Anne was denied her inheritance due to her gender, in breach of a centuries-old entail that allowed succession by the eldest heir regardless of sex. Her legal battle was supported by her mother, Lady Margaret Russell, and opposed by her husbands and even King James I. |
